SANTA CLARA, Calif -- May 4, 2000 -- Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq: YHOO) today announced the winners of Yahoo!® Web Corps (http://careers.yahoo.com), a program created by Yahoo! Careers and seven leading non-profit organizations including American Red Cross, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières, Grand Canyon Association, Habitat for Humanity International, KaBOOM!, and PBS Online.
In addition, Yahoo! Careers also has launched a new area dedicated to careers in the non-profit sector. People can search hundreds of non-profit jobs nationwide and obtain career advice and salary surveys from top publishers including The Chronicle of Philanthropy.
Designed to encourage people to use the Internet in furthering community service initiatives and promote careers in the non-profit sector, Yahoo! Web Corps has selected eight winners from more than 1,000 applicants who will receive orientation at Yahoo!'s Silicon Valley headquarters along with a $5,000 award supporting a 10-week internship with one of the participating charities. Winners will also receive summer housing stipends provided courtesy of Apartmentguide.com.
"Today the Internet enables us to affect positive change on a global level in ways that were never before possible," said Tanya Singer, producer, Yahoo! Careers. "We are thrilled to help these enthusiastic interns and premier non-profit organizations utilize the power of the Web to realize their full potential."
"With all this talk of B2B and B2C, few have really tapped the true potential of the Internet's ability to benefit the nonprofit sector as Yahoo! Web Corps has been able to do," said David Bray, winner of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America internship. "This is an exciting opportunity for me to demonstrate the true humanitarian power of the Web."
"I applied for the internship with PBS Online because I saw this as a great opportunity to combine my concern for social and political issues with my interest in computers and the Internet," said PBS Online winner, Christina Maimone. "The internship is a perfect match for my dream description of how I would want to spend my summer."
